Description
This original art print from the Tales of the Greeks, specifically the Iliad, is based on an 1842 sculpture by the Italian sculptor Innocenzo Fraccaroli. He won the Brera Academy’s prize for sculpture in 1829 when he was twenty-four years old. This enabled him to further his studies in Rome where he met the greatest sculptors of the time, including Thorvaldsen and Tenerani. He returned to northern Italy in 1835, including his native Verona, and focused on mythological figures in the style of Neoclassicism. He gained great popularity in the Great London Exhibition of 1851 and the Universal Exhibition in Paris of four years later. In the later 1850’s his works began to take on a more patriotic Italian flavor. He died in 1882 in Milan. The original painting is an oil on canvas measuring 16 x 20 inches and mounted on wooden bars. It is in the possession of the artist.
