Description
This is a reproduction of “Adrastus Slaying Himself at the Tomb of Atys” by Nicolai Abildgaard of 1775. It is an oil on canvas and is in the Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery. The artist of was thirty-two years of age when he created this painting having been born in Copenhagen. He studied under a private master and then joined the Royal Danish Academy of Art where he began winning awards in 1764. He traveled to Rome in 1772 to extend his studies and where he executed this masterpiece. He concentrated his studies in historical paintings, but then began to move into a direction which was later known as Romanticism. He returned to Copenhagen in 1777 where he joined the Royal Academy and taught mythology and anatomy. He was a religious free-thinker and advocate of political reform. He died on June 4, 1809.
