Description
This is a reproduction of Ganymede Pursued from the Berlin Painter of about 450 BCE. The Berlin Painter is the conventional name given to the Athenian rival of the Kleophrades Painter. He was in the second generation of red-figure paintingis image is taken from Ancient Greek pottery and here he represents the famous myth of Zeus and Ganymedes. The latter was the son of Tros of Dardania, the founder of the fabled city of Troy. When Zeus was searching for a new cup-bearer of the gods in the form of an eagle, he spied Ganymedes tending his father's flocks. He captured the youth and took him to Olympus to serve. This became the iconic myth of loving homoerotic couples. The boy Ganymedes is here shows being pursued by Zeus while he is playing with a toy hoop and pet rooster, probably gifts from his suitor.
