This is a reproduction nof “Academic Stury” by Carle Andrew van Loo of about 1730. Van Loo was born in Nice and arrived in Rome in 1712 when he was aged seven years. He studied there under masters and went to work in Paris in 1723 and won the Prix de Rome the next year. He was employed by the king of Sardinia after 1727. He returned to Paris in 1734 where he enjoyed royal patronage. Louis XV proclaimed him the First Painter of the king in 1762. He had a great success and was most popular up until his death in 1765.
