Description
This is a reproduction of a male nude by Hippolyte Flandrin. It betrays the influence of Ingres, a teacher of the artist. The date for the painting is uncertain. It could be early as 1829 or as late as 1845. He won the Prix de Rome in Paris in 1832 when he was twenty-three years old having studied under Hersent and Ingres. Upon his return to Paris, he became very popular and was patronized by the upper levels of French society. He was elected to the Academie des Beaux Arts in 1853 and the emperor Napoleon III bought a painting in 1857. He died in Rome on March 21, 1862 in Rome. The original painting is an oil on paper placed on canvas measuring 64.5 by 34 centimeters. It is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
