Description
This is a reproduction of “Young Spartans Exercising” by Edgar Degas of about 1860. This is an early work of the French master depeicting the Spartan habit of Ancient Greece in which boys and girls exercised together in a state of nudity. The artist entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1855 and this work is the most important of his period of six years which ended in 1861. This period was marked by Degas’ copying pieces with a classical or mythological theme. This work is one of the originals of the period. This masterpiece is currently in the National Gallery, London. It is an oil on canvas and measures 109.5 by 155 centimeters. It is on permanent display in the National Gallery in London.
