The god-like hero Achilles was entrusted as a small boy by his father Peleus to the care and education of the centaur Chiron on Mount Pelion. When he had grown to manhood his goddess mother Thetis came to take him so that he could begin his heroic adventures. This is a depiction of that mythological scene. The original was painted by Pompeo Batoni and measures 89.2 by 117.1 inches. It is in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia. Batoni was sixty-two when he created this masterpiece in 1770. He had been born in Lucca and apprenticed in Rome from the age of nineteen. He gained a patron in Gabrielli di Gubbio five years later and his fame spread. He became a member of the Accademia di San Luca in 1741 and became an Austrian noble for his double painting of Joseph II and Leopold II. He died in Rome in 1787.
