This is a reproduction of Elizabeth Jane Gardner’s “The Shepherd David” of abouit 1895. Elizabeth Gardner was born in 1837 New Hampshire and went to Paris to study when she was twenty-seven years old. She was denied entrance into the Scottl of Fine Arts for being a woman. She earned her living by copying masterworks for American tourists and was the first woman to exhibit at the Paris Salon in 1866. She was the first woman to receive a Gold Medal in 1872. Within two years she became the paramour of William Adolphe Bouguereau and finally married in 1896 after the deaths of Bouguereau’s wife and mother. She died in Paris in 1922. This painting was her most famous and depicts the young David as the brave shepherd who has saved his lamb from the ravages of a lion. The painting is an oil on canvas and measures 60.5 by 41.375 inches. It is in the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D. C.
