This is a reproduction of the Battle of Dunsinane by John Martin of about 1818. The dramatic scene recalls the climax of Shakespeare's Scottish play in which the anti-hero Macbeth musters his forces against the arms of Siward of Northumbria and Malcolm, the son of the slain King Duncan. In the painting can be seen lightning strikes and the three witches who introduce the play. The painter was born in 1789 Northumberland in humble conditions. For two years he sent paintings to the Royal Academy and in 1813 a piece was bought by a member of Parliament which established his reputation. His dramatic and romantic themes were often based in mythology and the Bible. He died in 1854 at the age of 64 leaving a legacy which was followed by many, notably by Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School in America. This piece was produced in about 1818 and is in the National Galleries of Scotland.
