This is a reproduction of the painting “Bacchus” which is in the Louvre. This work has a fascinating history which begins as a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci. The drawing was then painted over, possibly in Leonardo’s workshop. Painters thought to perhaps have done the work are Cesare da Sesto, Marco d’Oggiono, Francesco Melzi or Cesare Bernazzano. It was originally a depiction of Saint John the Baptist and then, between 1683 and 1983, it was overpainted and altered to depict Bacchus. Even in its original form, the drawing defied traditional depictions of the Baptist showing him t be beautiful, youthful and somewhat androgynous figure. It measures 70 by 45 inches and is in the Louvre in Paris.
