This is a reproduction of Francesco Melzi’s drawing of Leonardo da Vinci in later life. He was born into a noble family of Milan and joined Leonardo’s household in 1506 whe he was fifteen years old. He went with the master to Rome seven years later and to France in 1517. He worked with Leonardo as a painter and may have been his lover. He inherited all of the master’s possessions upon Leonardo’s death in 1519. Melzi died between 1568 and 1570. This red chalk on paper drawing was executed after 1510 and measures 10.83 inches high by 7.48 inches wide. It is in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle in England.
