Description
This is a reproduction of “Latona en de Lycische boeren” of about 1602 by Jan Bruegel the Elder. This is a masterpiece of the Flemish Renaissance which depicts a rural scene of Latona, the mother of Apollo and Diana, with the peasants of Lycia, the region of southwestern Anatolia particularly devoted to their worship. Jan Brueghel the Elder was born in Brussels and, orphaned at the age of ten, lived with the grandmother. He moved to Antwerp when 15 in about 1589 and was taken to Naples by his patron Francesco Carracciolo. A few years later he went to Rome where he entered the company of Cardinal Borromeo with whom he next moved to Milan. In 1596 he returned to Antwerp where he maintained a studio and died of cholera in 1625. This masterpiece is an oil on panel measuring 14.6 by 22 inches and is in the Rijksmusseum in Amsterdam.
