This is a reproduction of Hyacinth Changed into a Flower of 1769 by Nicolas Rene Jollain the Younger. The scene is taken from Greek Mythology recalling the tale of the young beloved of Apollo who was slain by the jealous North Wind. The god in his remorse changed Hyacinth into a flower that had imprinted on it the Greek word for woe. Hyacinth was a prince of Sparta where there was an annual festival in his honor, the Hyakintheia. Nicolas Rene Jollain the Younger had a famous father of the same name and at a young age entered the studio of Jean Baptiste Marie Pierre. He placed second in the Pirx de Rome in 1754 and became a member of the French Academy in 1765. He majored in historical paintings and engaged in commissions for the Bellevue Castle and Petit Trianon. He died in 1804 in Paris.
