Artist's Description

This is a reproduction of "The City of Washington from Beyond the Naval Yard" of 1833 by George Cooke. The artist was careful to accurately portray both the architecture of the city as well as the natural contours and hills of the area. The representation of the White House is enlarged to provide balance with the Capitol and the bulk of the city lies in the low ground between the two governmental buildings. Cooke was a Southern American landscape and portrait painter who was forty years old when he created this. He died in 1849 after having contracted cholera in New Orleans. This masterpiece is 25 inches wide and 18 inches high and is in the White House in Washington.
