Artist's Description

This is a reproduction of an 1876 print from Charles Shober & Company. The city was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark and named after King Louis XIV of France. Because it was located at the rapids of the Falls of the Ohio, it became a portage site and a hub for traffic crossing the Ohio River. It was incorporated as a city in 1828 and became a city of the slave trade as well as an important point of escape into free Indiana. It was a major stronghold for Union forces in the Civil War. After the war, ex-Confederates came into many leadership positions in the city. This print was made the year after the founding of the Kentucky Derby. It currently is in the possession of the Library of Congress.
