Description

A reproduction of Woutherus Mol’s work “Academiestudie van een staande naakte man en een zittend naakt meisje of een jonge man” or, Academic Study of a Standing Naked Man and a Sitting Young Man of 1808. Woutherus Mol was born in 1785 in Haarlem in the Netherlands and at age seventeen became a member of the Haarlem drawing society. With his parents’ permission he moved to Paris in 1806. There he took lesson from Jacques Louis David. The next year he was awareded the Dutch Prix de Rome, but enjoyed so much success in Paris that he never went to Rome to study. He returned to Haarlem in 1813 and made his reputation in a submission to the Amsterdam Art Exhibition. He began to come under much criticism and he suffered a nervous breakdown. He entered an almshouse in 1846 where he died eleven years later not having produced any art while there. This painting is an oil on canvas and measures 96 by 83 centimeters and is in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This masterpiece has been reproduced in an oil on canvas painting that measures 16 x 20 and is mounted on wooden bars. It is in the possession of the artist.
