Artist's Description

A reproduction of a work by Henry Scott Tuke, "Lover of the Sun" of 1922. This is one of over 1300 works attributed to Tuke and exemplifies his twin abiding loves of the sea and young men. His subjects and style caused quite a stir in Victorian and Edwardian England, but he was nonetheless a member of the Royal Academy and widely acclaimed. Henry Scott Tuke was born in York in 1858 and at seventeen entered the Slade School of Art. In the 1880's he joined the Newlyn School in Cornwall and in 1885 moved to Falmouth where he remained for the rest of his life. He painted many of his scenes from a floating studio off Falmouth, Cornwall. He glorified male friendship and companionship through his light and airy impressionistic style usually associated with blue skies and ocean water. He was a lover of the sea and ships. Tuke died on March 13, 1929 in Falmouth.
