This is a reproduction of Ivan Kramskoy’s masterpiece “Christ in the Wilderness” of 1872. The artist created the work at the age of thirty-five having been born in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He had previously created another version, but realized that the prior vertical painting was inappropriate and it was not received well. In this painting, Kramskoy used colder colors to reflect the chill of dawn as well as the thoughtful visage of Jesus as he contemplates the rigors of his upcoming ministry. The painting generated much comment when it appeared in an exposition in 1873. It is an oil on canvas and measures 184 by 214 centimeters and is in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Kramskoy had a successful career and painted many portraits before his death in St. Petersburg on April 8, 1887.
