Description
This master artist was one of the foremost English Romantic painters of all time. He was controversial in his own day but he raised the art of landscape to rival that genre of historical painting. He not only created wonderful oils, but he also was a master of watercolors and printing. He created this wonderful work at the age of seventy-one. He had receive formal training at the Royal Academy of Art from the age of fourteen and within eight years he was receiving enough patronage to insure his career in art. He died in 1851 in London. This watercolor by Turner is of the ancient seat of the dukes of Northumberland. It was originally built in the Eleventh Century after the Norman Conquest and has been renovated and remodeled many times. From this ancestral home the power family of Percy wielded its power over the North of England, aiding some kings and deposing others. The currant duke of Northumberland lives in part of the castle with his family and the remainder is open to the public during the Summer months. This masterpiece is in the Tate Gallery in London and is a watercolor on paper measuring 28.3 by 48.3 centimeters.
