Artist's Description
This is a reproduction of “Orestes Defended by Pylades” of 1822 by Antoine Julien Potier. He was twenty-six years old when he painted this masterpiece which won for him the Prix de Rome. The scene is from Greek Mythology showing the defense of Orestes by his life-long friend Pylades. This was a part of their plan to avoid the execution of Orestes for the murder of his mother in which Orestes feigned madness. Potier died in 1865. The original painting is an oil on canvas measuring 114.2 by 146.5 centimeter. It is currently in the possession of the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes, France.
