Artist's Description
This is a wonderful reproduction of Jean-Francois Millet's 1857 masterpiece, "Des glaneuses". The painting's sensitive depiction of the very poorest of the French agraian class was very poorly received by the urban middle and upper classes. This is one of the earliest depiction of poor workers who are not elevated by any sign of piety, but merely shown in an act symbolic of their grinding poverty. Millet sold the painting for 3,000 francs when his work was not much valued. After his death in 1875, public appreciation gradually increased and Des glaneuses last sold for 300,000 francs before its donation to the Louvre. It is now in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. The original oil on canvas is 33 inches high and 44 inches wide.
