This is a reproduction of a masterpiece by Jacques Louis David, The Lictors Bring to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons of 1789. The painting was produced in the early days of the French Revolution and the royal authorities banned its exhibition. They had to withdraw the ban due to popular pressure and in its exhibition the masterpiece was protected by a guard of art students. The work depicts the return of Brutus' sons' bodies after they were beheaded at their father's orders. They had attempted to bring back the monarchy to overthrow the Republic which had been founded by their father. The work had great resonance for the revolutionaries of Paris for it portrayed loyalty to the republic over concerns for one's own family. It measures 127 inches by 166 inches and is housed in the Louvre, Paris.
