Description
This is a reproduction of Anthony van Dyck's "Tribute Money" of about 1625. This work is the tribute of the master of Antwerp to the Italian tradition. The scene depicted is from Matthew's Gospel in which Jesus tells Peter to go to the sea and obtain tribute money from the mouth of a fish. The story was famously rendered as a fresco in about 1425 by Masaccio in Florence. Titian also produced a masterpiece in about 1564 Venice. Antonis van Dijck was born in 1599 Antwerp and was apprenticed to a painter after his mother's death when he was ten years old. He was precocious and within six years he had his own workshop and apprentice. By age nineteen he was accepted as a full member of the Guild of St. Luke, an honor which Rubens did not attain until he was 28 years old. He worked with Rubens but as the younger Rubens' reputation eclipsed his own, Van Dyck accepted the earl of Arundel's invitation to come to London in 1620. The next year he was in Italy to study the masters of the Renaissance and the Ancient World. From this period comes his work, The Tribute Money, visibly influenced by Titian. He returned in triumph to Antwerp in 1627 and in 1632 Charles I invited Van Dyck to become his court painter. He married a member of the English nobility in 1639 and died two years later on December 9, 1641.
