Description
This is a reproduction of Thomas Cole's "The Titan's Goblet" of 1833, which is generally acknowledged as his most enigmatic paintings. The Metropolitan Museum of Art states that the work "defies full explanation". In the late nineteenth century it was thought that the theme was akin to the Norse concept of the World Ash Tree, Yggdrasil. Cole created the painting in a short time and without commission. He offered it for sale for $ 100. The original measures 49 by 41 centimeters and is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Thomas Cole founded the Hudson River School and his work set the mode for the Romanticism and Naturalism which became the hallmark of the movement. The artist died in 1848 at the age of forty-seven.
