Artist's Description
This is a reproduction of Marten Eskil Winge's masterpiece "Thor's Battle with the Giants" of 1872. This Swedish associate of the Dusseldorf school of painting is famous for his depictions of scenes from Norse Mythology. He was forty-seven when he created this work and he died in 1896. This scene is a popular theme of the Vikings, Thor fighting the Giants. Germanic peoples often interpreted flashes of lighting across the horizon as Thor battling his eternal enemies. Thor would thunder out of his hall, Bilskirnir (Lightning) in his chariot drawn by two giant goats to battle the Giants with his famous hammer, Miolnir. This powerful image attempts to capture the drama and power of Norse mythology.
