This is a reprotuction of The Youth Samson by Leon Joseph Florentin Bonnat of 1891. The artist was born I in 1833 Bayonne but, between the ages of twelve and nineteen, he lived in Madrid where he found a passion in drawing the Old Masters and received formal training under Madrazo. Moving to Paris, he became a portraitist in great demand, his work showing the influence of Velazquez, Ribera, titian and Van Dyke. From twenty-five to twenty-eight he studied in Rome where he became friends with Degas and Moreau. He became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1862 and was very popular with American students. His emphases on overall effect and rigorous drawing placed him in the middle ground between the Imprerssionists and the Academics. He became a member of the National Academy of Design in 1917 and died five years later.
