This is a reproduction of Giovanni Fattori’s classic, “The Man in the Woods”, “L’Uomo nel bosco” of about 1883. The artist was from Livorno at age twenty was apprenticed to a local artist. The next year he moved to Florence where he entered the Academy of Fine Arts. He began to produce his own paintings in 1850 and nine years later joined the new Italian movement for painting in plein air. His paintings began to sell and he married. He remained loyal to Barbizon School being unenthusiastic about the Impressionists. Starting in 1870 he experienced financial difficulties and turned increasingly to etching which were favorably received. In his later years he became quite disillusioned and he died in 1908 in Florence. The original is an oil on canvas and measures 45 by 97 centimeters. It is in a private collection.
