This is a reproduction of Fate and Death, or The Last Journey by Jakub Schikaneder. The artist was about thirty-eight years old when he created this painting. The scene is symbolic of the Last Journey which ends in the Death that is fated for everyone. It is typical of his soft paintings, often of urban scenes featuring the poor or outcast. He was born in Prague of a poor German family of bureaucrats. Because of his family's devotion to art he was able to study art in Prague and Munich, beginning when he was sixteen. Completing his studies in 1879, he worked on the National Theatre in Prague and then traveled through much of Western Europe. He taught in Prague's Art College from 1891 and retired at the age of sixty-eight. He died the next year in Prague. This masterpiece is an oil on canvas and measures 95 by 129 centimeters. It is in a private collection.
