Artist's Description

Thomas Jones was a Welsh landscape artist who died in 1803 at the age of fifty five years. He studied in Welsh school and at Oxford and began exhibiting at the Society of Artists when he was twenty-three. This painting of 1774 was inspired by the Pindaric ode, the Bard, by Thomas Gray. In the poem a Welsh bard curses the on-coming armies of Edward I which are ending Welsh independence. He prophesies the downfall of the house of Plantagenet before hurling himself to his death from the top of a mountain. This painting of the poem is on display in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.
