When he returned to England he became depressed but was encouraged by his friend Frederick Leighton who stimulated his production of new work. He because known for his landscapes characterized by fluid brushwork and rich coloring. This masterpiece of 1872 shows this to great advantage. He died the same year of a heart attack at home on October 22. This painting is an oil on canvas and measures 340.2 by 909.8 inches. It is on display at the Tate Gallery in London.
