Artist's Description
A reproduction of Konstantin Somov’s work “Sergei Rachmaninoff” of 1925. The artist was born in 1869 and began studying at the Imperial Academ of Arts under Ilya Repin at age nineteen. He was gay and became friends with Alexandre Denois, Sergei Diaghilev and Leon Bakst. They founded “The World of Art” to which Somov made many contributions. After 1910 many of his expanding number of works were exhibited abroad, particularly in Germany. After 1917 he moved to America, but found it uncomfortable and resettled in Paris where he died on May 6, 1939. This painting was produced when the artist was fifty-six years old and Rachmaninoff was fifty-two years old. It is an oil on canvas and is in The State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
