Theodore Gericault

Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
This is a reproduction of Theodore Gericualt's masterpiece of 1816, "Seated Male Nude from Behind" of 1816. This icon of French Romanticism depicts an intimate portrayal of the male nude which dates from before his rise to prominence among French artists. He was twenty-five when this was created having already departed from the Neoclassical tradition in which he had been trained. Gericault made his own copies of the Masters in the Louvre and discovered a new vitality which became known as Romanticism. He completed this work either just before or early into his trip to Italy where he fell under the influence of Michelangelo. Within three years Gericault rose to international reputation which he maintained until his death in 1824.
