This is a reproduction of Robert Duncanson’s Scottish Landscape of 1871. Duncanson was an African-American painter of the Hudson River School who produced this masterpiece when he was fifty years old. Raised in Canada, he moved to Ohio at the age of twenty where he continued painting houses which he had been doing for three years. He yearned to be a portrait and landscape artist and self-taught himself. In the next year of 1842 he submitted three portraits for exhibition in Cincinnati and in 1845 moved to Detroit in search of more commissions. He was well received there and successful, but returned to Ohio the next year. He continued in a varied career and produced some of his best work in his later years. He died in Detroit in 1872.
