Description
Carl Bloch was a Danish painter and early in life decided that he wanted to be an artist, against the wishes of his parents. He visited the Netherlands on his way to Italy where he arrived in 1859 aged twenty-five years. His first success was with Prometheus Unbound in 1865. He created 23 paintings for the King’s Chapel at Fredericksborg Palace where they remain. He died of cancer in 1855 and was lamented as the great Danish artist of all time. In the sixteenth chapter of Judges, the Bible related that after the Philistines captured Samson, they blinded him and, in brass fetters, was put to work grinding grain in the prison. This depiction of Samson at the treadmill is an oil on canvas painting measuring 96.6 by 72.4 inches. It is in the National Gallery of Denmark.
