This is a reproduction of “Saint Sebastian” by Paul Delaroche of ca. 1838. This oil on canvas measuers 116.8 by 90.8 centimeters and is in the Detroit Institute of Arts. The artist was born in 1797 and achieved great success portraying historical scenes. The melodrama he infused into his paintings ally him with the Romanticists yet his attention to detail align him to Neoclassicism. He concentrated on realism and was a leading pupil of Antoine Jean Gros. He later mentored Jean Leon Gerome and Francisque Millet. He bridged the gap between Romanticism and Neoclassicism. In the late 1830’s he began to neglect historical subjects and began to produce more religious works. He stopped exhibiting his works in 1837 due to harsh criticism. He died in 1856.
