Artist's Description
This is a reproduction of the mammoth historical painting of 1891. Ilya Repin worked on the painting for 11 years and it measures 6.67 feet by 11.58 feet wide. It attempts to portray the drafting of a letter by the Zaporozhian Cossacks in reply to the 1664 demand by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV for submission of the Zaporozhians. The letter and the story may not be totally accurate but they both accurately display the freedom and arrogance of the Cossacks. The paintnig was bought by Czar Alexander III and is on display at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
