This is a reproduction of “Ovid Banished from Rome" of 1838 by J. M. William Turner. The infamous Roman author of saucy poetry had often irritated Augustus who was intent on restoring the "old morals" to the Roman Empire. In the scandal over his own daughter's infidelities, Publius Ovidius Naso was exiled from Rome to the barbaric lands on the shore of the Black Sea where he died after ten years. This masterpiece was produced when the artist was sixty-three years old and well advanced into the eccentricity which marked his life after the death of his father. He had repeated bouts of depression and died twelve years after completing this painting. The original painting is 49.2 inches wide and 37.24 inches wide and resides in a private collection.
