Description
This is a reproduction of “Nude Descending a Staircase, Number Two” by Marcel Duchamp of 1912. The painting was created when the artist was twenty-five years old. After being rejected by the Cubitsts as being Futurist, it was presented at the Paris Salon of Independents and then caused a large stir when presented at the 1913 Armory Show in New York. Duchamp placed the title at the bottom of the painting, NU DESCENDANT UN ESCALIER. He was born in Normandy at Blainville-Crevon and at the age of eight when to Rouen for his advanced education. He began painting Impressionistic landscapes at fourteen. He went to the Academie Julian three years later and started exhibiting his works at salons in 1908. This work brought him his first controversy and for the next three years Duchamp exposed himself to new developments in science and his painting efforts became sporatic. He emigrated to the United States in 1915 where he found he was a celebrity. In 1920 he began his dealing and collecting enterprises. He experimented with many forms of art and enterprise and died as a world famous member of the Avante Garde at his home at Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1968. This masterpiece is an oil on canvas and measures 57.875 by 35.125 inches. It is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
