This is a reproduction of the “Midas Washing at the Source of the Pactolus” by Bartolomeo Manfredi of 1619. The artist was thirty-seven years old when he created this masterpiece and was one of the leading members of the Caravaggisti, the followers of Caravaggio. He shunned public commissions and preferred to work before his easel with private patrons. He died in Rome in 1622. This mythological scene depicts the end of the Curse of King Midas when he was able to transmit the Golden Touch into the source of Pactolus River in Asia which was a traditional source of the valuable metal Electrum.
