Description
This is a reproduction of “Marcus Aurelius Distributing Bread to the People” by Joseph Marie Vien of 1765. The artist was forty-nine years old when he created this masterpiece. It was created in response to the commission plan of Louis XV who wanted a cycle of paintings depicting the virtues of the great rulers. It was not received well by all. Vien won the Prix de Rome in 1742 when he was twenty-six years old. When he was in Rome there began the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii which greatly influenced him. He became a pioneer in the Neoclassical style. He made a great reputation and became director of the French Academy in Rome in 1776. Among his many students was Jacque Louis David. Appointed first painter to the king in 1789, he was created a senator by Napoleon and a count in 1808. He died the next year and was buried in the Pantheon. This masterpiece is an oil on canvas and measures 300 by 301 centimeters. It is in the Musee de Picardie in Amiens, France.
