Description
This is a reproduction of “Ludus Pro Patria”of 1883 by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. This French Symbolist was fifty-nine when he painted this masterpiece. It depicts the Patriotic Games of a supposed “Golden Age” of the province of Picardy and is devoted to the themes of work, family and country. Chavannes had been born in a suburb of Lyon. He decided to become a painter at the age of twenty-four and made his Salon premier in 1850, four years later. He became noted for his murals and his first public commissions wree for the Musee de Picardie in the early 1860’s. He expanded the scope of his work and created murals in Marseilels and Poitiers and, particularly, for the Palais de Beaux Arts in Lyon. He got caught up in the political philosophical debate of the Third Republic as to what were the legitimate elements of “Frenchness”. He began works in Paris in 1874. In 1890 he became president and co-founder of the National Society of Fine Arts. Chavannes died in 1898. This painting is an oil on canvas and measues 44.7 by 77.6 inches.
