Description
This is a reproduction of Charles Le Brun's masterpiece pf 1646, "Icarus". This French master was one of the founders of the French Academy. His early training was in Italy and the dramatic contrasts of light and dark perhaps betrays the influence of Caravaggio. This shows Daedalus placing wings on his son Icarus so that they might escape their prison on Crete. The foreshortening of the figures contributes to the emotional nature of the painting in which the father is tenderly preparing his son for the dangerous flight. The painting is now at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg,
