This is a reproduction of “The Greeks and Trojans Fighting over the Body of Patroclus”that was painted between 1836 and 1844 by Antoine Wiertz. After the lover of Achilles was killed by Hector, Prince of Troy, he was stripped of his armor by his killer and the Trojans attempted to take the body. Ajax and Menelaus led the Greeks to reclaim the body and Wiertz captures the tumult and struggle. He was born in Belgium in 1806 and was patronized in his early years by Pierre Joseph de Paul de Maibe and King Willem I. His work placed second in the Prix de Rome in 1828 and he moved to Paris the next year. He won in 1832 and lived in Rome for three years until 1837 when he established his residence at Liege. This work was his first on a grand scale. He moved to Brussels after the death of his mother in 1844. In his later years he was able to get Belgium to establish a museum for his works which he donated to the kingdom. He died on June 18, 1865. This work is an oil on canvas and measures 3...

Raised in South Louisiana from 1953, he graduated from Baylor University in 1976 and pursued a Masters in History at the University of Louisiana until 1988 when he moved to Austin, Texas. For over ten years Caperton has been selling his original art and reproductions of original work and the masters through various portals on the Internet. One of his works won a Jurors Prize at Austins Art Erotica in 2010. He has always been employed in helping positions and continues to produce works for the enjoyment of the public.
