Artist's Description
This is a reproduction of Egalite devant la Mort of 1848 by William Adolphe Bouguereau. He was twenty-three at the time of this painting having entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts two years before. He represents the Angel of Death covering a dead young man with a death shroud. It brings forth the inevitability of death as evidenced by Bouguereau's own notation: When the Angel of Death spread its shroud on you, what will be served of your life even if you have done good on earth. The work is a counterblast to the European revolutionary movements of 1848 which aimed at political equality which Bouguereau asserts can only be gained in the hereafter. The painting reflects influences from English Neoclassicism as well as French romanticism. It measures 141 by 269 centimeters and is an oil on canvas. It is in the Musee D'Orsay in Paris.
