Description
This is a reproduction of “Epaminondas Defending Pelopidas at the Battle of Mantinea” of 1900 by William Rainey. This work of art was one of the illustrations used in “Plutarch’s Lives for Boys and Girls” by W. H. Weston. The scene depicts an episode in Plutarch’s Lives in which the young Epaminondas defended his friend Pelopidas during the Battle of Mantinea. These were Theban young men who were included in the Theban contribution to the Spartan alliance against the Arcadian city of Mantinea. In the battle Pelopidas received seven wounds and his friend Epaminondas fought off the Arcadians and saved his life. This reproduction is also available as an oil on canvas painting that measures 14 by 20 inches.
