A reproduction Ecce Homo by Antonio Ciseri. Antonio Ciseri was born in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland in 1821. Moving to Florence when he was twelve years old, he was admitted to the Accademia di Belle Arti the next year. At the age of twenty-eight he began teaching pupils and was widely known for his religious paintings. He performed many commissions for churches in Italy and Switzerland and his paintings were almost photographic in their realism. He was also an accomplished portraitist and died in Florence at the age of sixty nine. This painting is probably the ultimate expression of the Passion theme in the art of the Western World. Ciseri turns the lone figure of the suffering Christ from addressing the viewing audience as was traditional so that Jesus is presented to the crowd deeper into the painting. The original painting is in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Florence.

This masterpiece reminds me of a book by the same title by the German philosopher, Friendrich Nietzsche. It's an extraordinary autobiography of one of the greatest philosophers the world has ever known. congratulations on the sale.
