Artist's Description

This is a reproduction of Henry Holiday's "Dante Meeting Beatrice" of 1884. This is Holiday's most important painting and is an oil on canvas measuring 56 inches high by 80 inches wide. The scene is inspired by Dante's autobiography, La Vita Nuova, in which he admitted that he hid his attraction to Beatrice by pretending to be attracted to other women. In this scene Beatrice ignores him because she had heard rumors of his sham. Holiday meticulously researched the buildings and perspectives of his paintings and this Florentine bridge can be identified as the Santa Trinita. This masterpiece is in the Walter Art Gallery in Liverpool, England. If you are interested in commissioning an oil painting on canvas of this art print, please send me an email attroy@trycap.com.
