Description
This is a reproduction of "Dance to the Music of Time" of about 1636 by Nicolas Poussin. This painting was created when Poussin was about forty-one years old at the commission of Cardinal Rospigliosi, later Pope Clement IX. It is a thoroughly mythological scene with Aurora leading the chariot of Helios in the sky as Father Time provides the music for the dance. The male figure at the back of the circle is Poverty and to his right is Labor. Who, in turn, holds the hand of Wealth. The circle is completed by the figure of Pleasure who knowingly gazes at the viewer. Poussin was born in Normandy and ran away to Paris when he was eighteen. He moved to Rome when he was thirty in the company of his friend Marino and secured the patronage of the Cardinal Barbarini. He participated in the emerging Roman Baroque style. He returned to France in 1640 and became First Painter to Louis XIII but returned to Rome in disgust at the intrigues of the French Court. He continued to work there but began to decline in health after 1650. He died in Rome in 1664 leaving no children. This masterpiece is an oil on canvas and measures 82.5 by 104 centimeters. It is in the Wallace Colleciton in London.
