Artist's Description
This is a reproduction of a msterpiece from Raphael, Portrait of Bindo Altoviti that was completed between 1512 and 1515 in Rome. The subject was a Florentine who had become a prominent banker in Rome. The work shows the influence of Leonardo da Vinci whose works Raphael was studying closely during this period. The portrait is a good example of the grace of Raphael's portraits of men in this period and also displays the artist's use of heavy contrast between light and dark. The painting measures 24 by 17 inches and is an oil on wood. It is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C. It had been sold by Altoviti's descendants to Ludwig of Bavaria in 1808 and left Germany in 1936.
