This is a reproduction of "All Hands to the Pumps" of 1889 by Henry Scott Tuke. This masterpiece portrays the true naval situation behind this commond phrase indicating a need for everyone to help with a really important task to be done in a short time. In this painting the seamen are pumping out a waterlogged vessel. A sail has blown away in a gust of wind and the reversed ensign indicates that the vessel is in danger. A sailor in the shrouds is pointing to the possibility of nearby help. In 1914 Tuke was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts having established himself as an independent artist who could afford to work in France, Italy and the West Indies. He died in 1929 at Falmouth, Cornwall at the age of seventy. This masterpiece is in the Tate Gallery in London.
